CNC precision parts customized processing process

When we talk about industry, machine shops top the list for customizing machined parts. They are places where individual customers can tailor individual parts specifically for them.

What are the ways of product customization?

Customers can obtain customized products in a number of ways:

· Independent development. For example, a customer already knows the part he needs, so he can create a drawing or 3D model of it, then come to the machine shop and order it to be manufactured.

· Collaborative development. It's a great way to get custom-designed and machined parts when people aren't completely clear about the design or its prospects. This puts forward certain requirements for machine shop (for example, design department). The client interacts with the department and co-creates custom designs.

· Adaptive customization. This approach makes the manufacturer's job easier, but imposes many restrictions on the customer. This approach involves creating a base part that can be modified according to customer requirements. By using this approach, manufacturers are able to produce a large number of products with a degree of customization without wasting too much time retooling the manufacturing process.

· Cosmetic customization involves creating a standard product and many different "styles". For example, different colors. This is the easiest way to create custom parts for mass production, but it provides only rough custom parts capability.

Machine shop Requirements

If the machine shop's goal is to make a single custom part for a customer, they must somehow adjust production. First, custom machining involves a small number of different production parts. This means that manufacturers will have to create a new manufacturing process, creating a CNC program for each part from scratch, which makes CNC machining services for new products easier.

Given that there are thousands of part types, each with its own requirements for materials and geometry, shortening lead times is the main and most difficult task that manufacturers have to solve.

To reduce the time it takes to find materials, manufacturers must provide standard stocks for the widest range of materials.

The workshop must also have as many different machine tools as possible. Losing orders just because you have two lathes and no grinders is a bad strategy. The same can be said of tools and knives.

Manufacturers must be prepared to produce as many different types of machined parts as possible, including plastic and metal (steel and aluminum) parts. In other words, be prepared for anything.

What are machined parts?

Machined parts can be seen everywhere in our daily life. You can understand the concept of parts, from simple design, machining, and finished work to the finish of each surface using a variety of tools at precise locations. Manufacturing these custom components requires the right technology or extensive experience to be quick and cost-effective.

CNC machining of custom parts

Modern small-scale production is very different from mass production. This type of manufacturing is becoming more popular as the demand for custom parts increases, so much research and development is aimed at improving the efficiency of flexible manufacturing systems.

CNC machines play an important role in the flexibility of part creation. Only 10-15 years ago, in order to make parts with some complex surfaces, a lot of additional manufacturing (i.e. manual labor to create patterns for machine tools to follow the required) had to be done, so complex parts were mostly mass produced or used manual labor, which was lengthy and expensive. Today, CNC programs replace all that. In addition, special computer-aided manufacturing systems have been developed, greatly reducing the time required to create such programs.

Modern tool mechanisms allow manufacturers to install a large number of tools on lathes in order to minimize the time required to change tools during machining.

A range of standardized clamps and jaws has been developed to meet most of the current machining needs. These fixtures usually consist of many individual components that can be assembled together on the worktable of the machine tool to hold the parts in place during the processing phase. Of course, they are less accurate than dedicated fixtures, but modern measuring systems have eliminated this disadvantage.

Almost all types of modern CNC machines can be fitted with a special probe. Then the probe is used to measure the actual size and position of the fixed inventory to completely eliminate the positioning error. It can also be used to measure the actual dimensions of parts at certain stages of the manufacturing process to ensure that if any errors occur, they are detected and corrected early, minimizing time loss.

Custom CNC machined metal parts

In addition to precision machining methods, large metal parts are usually processed by 2-4 axis machining (turning, grinding, milling), which can achieve unparalleled accuracy. With high-tech CNC cutting and 4-axis machining, you get a smooth, carefully crafted finish.
